Racing to return to the fold!

Firstly, may I offer my apologies for the lack of blogging on Fu’Gutty cars for the last month – alas real life got in the way of the hobby, and faffing was papped to the sidelines.

Thankfully, I’ve got several things worth writing about now so I shall get on with it pronto.

As you are no doubt aware, we at Fu’Gutty cars are a fan of the 1/4 mile drag race. Man vs Man, Machine vs Machine. Indeed, we’ve been several times recently to Crail. This time though, we co-opted others into our madness.

York Raceway had  RWYB session on Sat 19th Sept, and 5 hardy souls made the trek to see how their chariots would fare against the wrath of the Christmas tree.

We (the two who reside in Scotland) convoyed down to Wetherby for an overnight stop, and were met there by M’Coli who Naviguessed ™ us to the track.

First up, and with an honourable mention for attending despite getting off his night shift at 6.30am was M’Coli in the venerable Peugeot 106 1.1 5 speed.

Then, in the most effective wardrobe mover known to mankind was DFowler2000. 2.3litres of turbo charged 4cyl goodness was coupled to the autobox in his Volvo 740 estate.

Next was explosive-cabbage with his WVO powered Peugeot 205. Fitted with the larger 1900cc XUD and bestowed with many a tweak, it was easily the most track focused weapon present.

Can Will Fix it? Yes he can!

I completed the line up in the trusty Octavia TDi

Hairnet was the official photographer for the day- and both he and M’Coli provided the videos below- enjoy!

Everyone had a successful first run – no clutches were harmed, and the tyres still appeared to be round and black. That said, no one was particularly quick, with the RHS of the track being grippy (leading to bogging down) and the LHS being slippy (too much wheelspin.

Back in the holding area we watched the serious cars record ridiculous times. The sound and sight of a large v8 attempting to inhale ALL OF THE AIR is spectacular. There ain’t no replacement for displacement!

Buoyed by a successful first run, we rattled up for another go as soon as possible. 3 of the 4 cars improved, but I managed to stall the Octavia on the line.. Thankfully I managed to key on quickly and get down the strip before the embarrassing 20 second mark.

Next time round was more successful- I was up against a Tdi Superb that was stock- an ideal opportunity to see just how good my homebrew remap was..

A derv grudge match also took place- with Will crossing the line before me due to his faster reaction time, but the Rank taxi Octavia managed to cover the 1/4 ET in 5 hundredths of a second less than the mighty XUD’d Pug. All in good humour- but likely to be run again in the not too distant future!

All in all, a great day was had, and Mr D Fowler in the Volvo came out on top. Best times for the day were as follows:
DFowler2000 (Volvo 760 TIC) : 17.05

320touring (Skoda Octavia TDi) : 17.32

explosive-cabbage(Peugeot 205 TD) : 17.37

M’Coli ( Peugeot 106 1.1) : 19.34

The next event is already in the planning- and will likely be up here- I’ll keep you updated.

In the meantime, have a look at some of the interesting cars that turned up (including a 650bhp, 11second Audi)
